Hexagrama 15 – Modéstia

O oráculo

A Modéstia traz sucesso.
O homem nobre leva seus empreendimentos até o fim.

Interpretação

O caminho do céu é diminuir o que está cheio e aumentar o que se encontra vazio; o caminho da terra é transformar o que está pleno e ajudar o que é modesto a fluir suavemente. É da natureza do céu oferecer bênçãos e resplendor; é da natureza da terra ser humilde e trabalhar com afinco. Os deuses destroem os orgulhosos e fazem prosperar os humildes. De igual modo os homens rejeitam aqueles que estão cheios de si e amam os modestos.

A verdadeira humildade não consiste em se inferiorizar ou se humilhar, tampouco em desvalorizar nossos dons, mas em realizar a paz e o equilíbrio. Está muito próxima do sentido religioso de se reconhecer que somos todos iguais perante Deus.
“O destino segue leis imutáveis… Mas está ao alcance do homem modelar seu destino à medida que se coloca sob a influência de forças benéficas ou de destruição… O homem superior, desse modo, leva suas obras a um bom fim sem se vangloriar do que foi realizado” (Wilhelm).

Conselho

O homem nobre reduz o que está excessivo e aumenta o que está insuficiente.
Ele avalia e distribui as coisas pela justa medida.

Interpretação

O homem íntegro volta seu empenho para harmonizar as coisas que se encontram em seu âmbito de ação. Pondera cada fato e circunstância de modo a estabelecer uma equanimidade entre as partes. Trata-se de uma tarefa que exige sobriedade e disposição para servir ao bem comum, sem sobrepor sua pessoa. A imagem da modéstia encontra-se aqui no fato de fazer parecer natural e fácil aquilo que exigiu um longo trabalho.

Um homem superior modesto em sua modéstia 
pode atravessar a grande água. 
Boa fortuna.

Um empreendimento perigoso como a travessia de um grande rio torna-se ainda mais difícil quando se tem de levar em conta muitas exigências e considerações. Modéstia manifesta. 
A perseverança traz boa fortuna.

Os lábios exprimem o que ocupa o coração. Quando a modéstia de um homem é tal que chega a se refletir em seu comportamento, isso se torna para ele fonte de boa fortuna. Desta forma a possibilidade de exercer uma influência duradoura surge naturalmente, e ninguém poderá impedi-la.

Um homem superior, de mérito e modesto 
leva tudo à conclusão. 
Boa fortuna.

Este é o centro do hexagrama, onde seu segredo é desvendado. Um significativo prestígio é alcançado graças a grandes realizações. Se um homem se deixa deslumbrar pela fama, será logo criticado e surgirão dificuldades. Se, ao contrário, ele permanecer modesto apesar de seus méritos, será estimado e encontrará o apoio necessário para levar seu trabalho à conclusão

Nada que não seja favorável 
para a modéstia no movimento.

Tudo em sua medida própria. Até a conduta modesta pode ser exagerada. Aqui, entretanto, ela é adequada, pois a posição entre um ajudante valoroso abaixo e um governante bondoso acima implica em grande responsabilidade. Não se deve abusar da confiança do homem em posição superior, assim como não se devem esconder os méritos do homem em posição inferior. Há, sem dúvida, funcionários que não desejam se sobressair; eles se escondem sob o aspecto literal das ordens, recusam toda responsabilidade, aceitam remunerações sem fazerem jus e ostentam títulos injustificáveis. Não se vanglorie de sua riqueza diante do próximo. 
É favorável atacar com violência. 
Nada que não seja propício.

A modéstia não deve ser confundida com a indulgência fraca que tudo deixa passar. Quando um homem ocupa uma posição de responsabilidade deve, em certos momentos, recorrer a medidas enérgicas. Mas para isso não deve tentar impressionar fazendo alarde de sua própria superioridade, e sim assegurar-se dos que estão ao seu redor. As medidas a serem tomadas devem ser puramente objetivas, sem qualquer conteúdo de ofensa pessoal. Assim, a modéstia manifesta-se até mesmo no rigor.

Modéstia que se exterioriza. 
É favorável colocar os exércitos em marcha 
para castigar a própria cidade e o próprio país.

Aquele que é verdadeiramente sincero em sua modéstia deve manifestá-la. Nisso deve proceder com grande energia. Quando surge a hostilidade, nada mais fácil que culpar o outro. Pode acontecer que um homem fraco, sentindo-se ofendido, volte-se para si mesmo, refugiando-se na autocompaixão e julgando que é a modéstia que o impede de defender-se. A verdadeira modéstia leva o homem a uma ação enérgica em busca da ordem; ele começa por disciplinar a si mesmo e aos que estão mais próximos. Só se pode realizar algo de valor quando se tem a coragem de conduzir os exércitos contra si mesmo.
